Oil & Water Art
This morning, we had fun exploring the properties of oil and water, and discovered a neat way to learn about the color palette. I’ve never tried anything like this before, but it turned out REALLY cool!
Materials
- Vegetable oil
- Food coloring (water-based)
- Water
- 9×13 cake pan
- Plastic pipettes
- 3 Cups
Instructions
- Fill each cup with water.
- Make each cup contain a primary color using the food coloring (red, blue and yellow).
- Add vegetable oil to the cake pan, just enough to cover the bottom.
- Use the transfer pipettes to add droplets of colored water.

- Watch the magic appear!
FYI: When you put your hands in the pan the sensation is really…different. It feels like you should be able to just lift the stuff right out of the pan like a gob of slime. It is almost a soft and soothing sensation. Very strange. You’ll just have to try this and see what I mean.
I tried to make a print, and the colors transferred very well, but then I wasn’t quite sure how to remove the oil. Any ideas out there? How would you make a print from this activity?

What a fun experiment! I am going to have to do this soon! I have pinned it to my Science board
Thanks!
Gorgeous! You should next place a piece of paper on top and see if you can make some marble paper??? not sure, but could be a nice experiment!

I tried doing a transfer, and the colors made a really cool print. I wasn’t sure what to do about the oil. If you have any ideas I would love to hear some suggestions. Thanks for the comment!
Neat! I’ll have to try this soon.
Wow have to try this next week! Looks fantastic. What if you make the pic onto material? We’ll need to try when we do it. Thanks for sharing.
I just wanted to let you know I featured you on Blissful and Domestic today. Stop by and Grab a button:>

What a neat science/sensory experiment in one. Found you on It’s Playtime. I’m linking up to this in a post about Science Experiments with Preschoolers. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! We had so much fun swirling the colors around, and watching the interaction between the water, oil and food coloring.
